Biography of Elias Howe (05/X IPS 4Semester)

Gambar
Titah Mangayu Nastiti X IPS 4 Semester/05 Elias Howe was born on July 9, 1819, in Spencer, Massachusetts. Howe was born with a disability that left him weak in one arm, which may have led his inspiration to invent a functioning sewing machine to help ease the manual aspect of producing garments. He left home at the age of 16 in order to apprentice in a machine worker's shop and learn the intricacies of manufacturing. However, Howe's disability and a lull in the economy forced him to relocate to Boston and work in a friend's machine shop. At this shop, the dreams for inventing a reliable sewing machine started for Howe. The disability would often cause a great deal of fatigue and pain that limited Howe's ability to perform manual labor. He had married by the time he moved to Boston and had to find ways to provide for his family. His sewing machine, if successful, could solve the financial problems for the family with Howe's disability limiting his options for ste

He was particularly noted for his contributions in the fields of Aristotelian philosophy and medicine. He composed the Kitāb al-shifāʾ (Book of the Cure), a vast philosophical and scientific encyclopaedia, and Al-Qānūn fī al-ṭibb (The Canon of Medicine), which is among the most famous books in the history of medicine. Avicenna did not burst upon an empty Islamic intellectual stage. It is believed that Muslim writer Ibn al-Muqaffaʿ, or possibly his son, had introduced Aristotelian logic to the Islamic world more than two centuries before Avicenna. Al-Kindī, the first Is

They made the first controlled, sustained flight of a powered,   heavier-than-air aircraft   with the   Wright Flyer   on December 17, 1903, 4 mi (6 km) south of   Kitty Hawk, North Carolina . The brothers were also the first to invent   aircraft controls   that made fixed-wing   powered flight   possible. In 1904–1905, the Wright brothers developed their flying machine to make longer-running and more aerodynamic flights with the  Wright Flyer II , followed by the first truly practical  fixed-wing aircraft , the  Wright Flyer III . Biography of Joseph Priestley

Gambar
by Aryani  (X IPS 4 Semester/01) Joseph Priestley FRS 24 March 1733 – 6 February 1804) was an English chemist, natural philosopher, separatist theologian, grammarian, multi-subject educator, and liberal political theorist who published over 150 works. He has historically been credited with the independent discovery of oxygen in 1774 by the thermal decomposition of mercuric oxide, having isolated it. Although Swedish chemist Carl Wilhelm Scheele also has strong claims to the discovery, Priestley published his findings first. Scheele discovered it by heating potassium nitrate, mercuric oxide, and many other substances about 1772. During his lifetime, Priestley's considerable scientific reputation rested on his invention of carbonated water, his writings on electricity, and his discovery of several "airs" (gases), the most famous being what Priestley dubbed "dephlogisticated air" (oxygen). Priestley's determination to defend phlogiston theory and to reject wha

He was born in the age known as the Golden Age of Islam . He is regarded as one of the greatest astronomers in the entire tradition of the Islamic world. With his deep interest in trigonometry – the branch of math that deals with three sides and three angles, he found relations between trigonometric signs like sine, cosine, and tangent . This led him to determine the changing position of the Sun, Moon, night and, day in a year .  Thanks to Al-Battani's discovery, today we can know that in a  year there are 365 days, 5 hours, 46 minutes and 24 seconds           Al-Battani ( Latin Albatenius, Albategnus, or Albategni) , born c. 858, in or near Harran, near Urfa, Syria . Biography of Galileo Galilei

(He is one of the few famous people known by his first name rather than his surname). Galileo was the first of 6 or, some say, 7 children. His father was a musician and although the family was fairly well off they were by no means rich. In 1581 Galileo started studying medicine at Pisa University. However he soon ‘fell in love’ with mathematics and he decided to learn to teach mathematics and philosophy. (Much against his father’s wishes!) Galileo left the university in 1585 and began privately teaching mathematics. He soon gained a reputation as a brilliant mathematician and in 1589 he became a lecturer in mathematics at Pisa University. However many people now believe this famous experiment is a myth. In any case other scholars had already reached the conclusion that Aristotle was wrong. However Galileo’s criticism of Aristotle irritated the other staff

At the age of 18 months, Spencer's father died and his death left him in the care of his uncle and aunt. At the age of 7 years, his uncle also died forcing him to leave school and help his aunt work. He worked in a factory from the age of 12 to 16. One day he got word that a local paper mill would start using electricity in the day-to-day operations of the mill. Because he comes from an area that has never had electricity, namely Maine, Spencer was very interested in the news. Finally he was accepted at the paper mills and assigned electrical installations. At the age of 18, Spencer joined the United States Navy and became increasingly concerned with electricity. He eventually learned wireless communication and took an active part in wireless learning when the Titanic sank. His love for electricity made him ex
