John-Joseph Merlin was a Belgian inventor who is best known for having invented the first roller skate, although his invention was not perfect because it was difficult to control.
Jean-Joseph Merlin was born in 1735 in the city of Huy, Belgium. He is a noted inventor for the invention of the inline skate in 1760. He also improved musical instruments and produced automata, such as the Cox watch. He created the Merlin Engineering Museum to display his machines. In conjunction with London inventor James Cox, Merlin is also responsible for the Silver Swan automaton currently on display at the Bowes Museum in County Durham, England. He worked in Paris and then in London, where he died in 1803.
Inventor named John Joseph Merlin first patented roller skates in Belgium in 1760. The skates he made were similar to ice skates, equipped with wheels that lined up like blades on ice skates in general. Currently roller skates with this type are called inline skates. Unfortunately, these skates are difficult to control because they don't have brakes so they can't stop when moved.
